The Vikos Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the world in proportion to its width, forming the core of the Vikos-Aoos National Park. It offers impressive views from Oxia (near Monodendri) and Beloi (near Vradeto) viewpoints.

MonodendriDuration: 2-3 hours

Monodendri is one of the most famous Zagorochoria, built at an altitude of 1,060 meters, with a unique view towards the Vikos Gorge. Here lies the historic Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, as well as the Rizarios Exhibition Center.

You will visit the Oxia viewpoint to admire the imposing Vikos Gorge from above. It is the ideal spot to understand the scale and wild beauty of the Vikos-Aoos National Park.

Why it's worth it: The morning clarity of the atmosphere offers the best visibility for photos of the gorge.

Monastery of Agia Paraskevi

This is a historic monastery built literally on the edge of the cliff, offering a stunning experience. The route from the village square is easy and passes through the traditional cobblestone path.

Airport

The nearest airport is Ioannina State Airport "King Pyrrhus" (IOA).

Public transport

There are daily intercity bus (KTEL) routes from Ioannina to some of the Zagorochoria, but frequency may be limited.

Rentals

Car rental is highly recommended from Ioannina or Athens, as it offers the necessary flexibility to explore the scattered villages.

Walkability

The villages themselves are extremely accessible on foot, with cobblestone paths. However, for moving between villages and accessing attractions, a car is required. There is an extensive network of marked hiking trails.

The best time to visit Zagorochoria is spring and autumn, specifically May and October, due to the mild weather and impressive nature colors. Summer is ideal for outdoor activities and coolness, while winter offers snowy landscapes and skiing opportunities.

Papigo, divided into Megalo and Mikro, is one of the most famous and well-preserved Zagorochoria, known for its special architecture and the natural rock pools (ovires) of Rogavos. It is an ideal starting point for hikes towards the Astraka refuge and Drakolimni.

Stone Bridges in KipoiDuration: 1-2 hours

Kipoi is a picturesque village famous for its many stone bridges, such as the three-arched Plakidas bridge (or Kalogeriko) and the single-arched Kokoris bridge (or Noutsou). They are excellent examples of Epirus architecture and are great for photographs.

DilofoDuration: 1-2 hours

Dilofo is one of the best-preserved Zagorochoria, built at an altitude of 900 meters, with a ban on vehicle traffic within the settlement. It features impressive mansions and cobblestone paths, keeping its traditional character intact.

Vradeto StepsDuration: 1-1.5 hours (crossing)

The Vradeto Steps is an impressive paved path with 1,200 steps, connecting the villages of Vradeto and Kapesovo. It is a masterpiece of Epirus craftsmanship and offers a unique hiking experience.

You will explore the famous arched bridges of the area, such as the Plakidas three-arched bridge and the Kokoris bridge. These architectural gems are excellent examples of Epirus art and are great for photographs.

Why it's worth it: The Kipoi area gathers the most impressive bridges close to each other.

Walk in Dilofo
